**Beijing, February 25 (Xinhua News) - Reporter Wang Jing:** On February 25, China National Petroleum Corporation Engineering Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. (CNPC ETRI) and Saudi Aramco signed a contract for a joint scientific research project titled "Research and Application of Intelligent Drilling Technology." The project is set to officially launch on March 1. This marks the first time that China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has secured a scientific research collaboration project with Saudi Aramco, a company whose R&D initiatives have historically been dominated by major international oilfield service companies. The collaboration signals that the Chinese petroleum technology team will play a crucial role in shaping the development blueprint for intelligent drilling technologies over the next five years, positioning CNPC at the forefront of advanced technology research in the oil sector. Saudi Arabia, a global energy powerhouse and key partner in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is home to Saudi Aramco, the largest oil and gas producer in the world. The collaboration between CNPC and Saudi Aramco stems from the alignment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, underscoring the technological synergy between the two nations. The agreement also serves as a recognition of CNPC’s research capabilities and its world-leading expertise in intelligent drilling technology. The joint project began its conceptual planning on October 20, 2017. CNPC’s drilling acceleration research team collaborated closely with Saudi Aramco’s Advanced Research Center’s Intelligent Drilling Department, preparing detailed technical reports, project proposals, and feasibility analyses. The project’s innovative approach, unique research methodology, and efficient budget management earned widespread approval from Aramco's internal technical committee and shareholders, securing funding as one of the largest R&D investments Saudi Aramco has made in the Asia-Pacific region in recent years. The project is led by Dr. Cui Meng, a recipient of the Sun Yueqi Young Scientist Award. Under his leadership, CNPC’s drilling acceleration research team, which has a long-standing focus on accelerating drilling efficiency, will conduct the research. The team’s past achievements, such as the development of the Intelligent Drilling Speed Navigator and Cuttings Bed Removal Tools, have significantly enhanced mechanical drilling speeds, extended drill bit lifespan, and reduced friction torque. These advancements have earned the team 15 national invention patents and resulted in over 30 papers published in international journals. Their "Intelligent Drilling Speed Navigator" was awarded the prestigious EP Engineering Technology Innovation Award at the 45th annual conference in the U.S. In addition to the intelligent drilling project, CNPC and Saudi Aramco plan to expand their research collaboration into other areas, including expandable pipe technology, with previous technical exchanges having already laid the groundwork for future cooperation.
