**Beijing News Flash (Reporter Ni Wei):** On February 25th, the National Anti-Pornography and Illegal Publications Office released information regarding the handling of cases involving minors during the winter holiday. Among them, Shanghai authorities dealt with a case where inappropriate content appeared in the holiday homework of Shanghai’s private SMIC School, and Baidu was fined for hosting obscene comic content on one of its forums that could potentially influence minors. According to reports, during the winter holiday, the National Anti-Pornography and Illegal Publications Office launched a special campaign to protect minors and create a positive holiday atmosphere. The focus was on cracking down on harmful content in areas such as educational apps, online games, web literature, web comics, and portal websites. A large number of cases were swiftly and severely dealt with. One of the highlighted cases was the much-discussed "inappropriate jokes in Shanghai holiday homework" incident. In January, following media reports about inappropriate content in the English homework for eighth graders at Shanghai’s private SMIC School, local authorities immediately launched an investigation. It was discovered that the homework material titled *Holiday English Homework (NJ) [Eighth Grade]* contained banned and obscene content and was an illegal publication. This material was published without proper authorization by Shanghai Dongfang Laser Education and Culture Co., Ltd. As a result, the city's Cultural Market Administrative Law Enforcement Team confiscated all related materials and imposed a fine on the company. Additionally, the company’s license to operate publishing activities was revoked. Separate legal actions were taken against the printing and distribution units involved, namely Shanghai Great Wall Cartography and Printing Factory and Shanghai Lianchen Book Co., Ltd. In another case in January, based on a tip-off forwarded by the National Anti-Pornography and Illegal Publications Office, Beijing authorities investigated and penalized Baidu for hosting obscene comic content on a forum. Between April 2014 and January 2019, Baidu’s forum "Forced Climax Device" provided comics that promoted obscene content, violating social norms and potentially influencing minors. In February, Beijing's Cultural Market Administrative Law Enforcement Team ordered Baidu to rectify the situation and imposed an administrative fine of 20,000 yuan. Baidu has since removed the offending comics and closed the relevant forum. In another significant case, authorities in Kunshan, Jiangsu, handled a violation involving the educational app "Homework God Assistant" disseminating harmful information. Since April 2017, Kunshan Hongyue Information Technology Co., Ltd. had been operating the "Red Fruit Reading" website and app without a license. Some of the novels available on the site contained content harmful to public morals, and the app promoted such content through ads on the "Homework God Assistant" app. The "Homework God Assistant" app was ordered to cease its illegal activities, while the "Red Fruit Reading" website and app were shut down. Both companies were fined as part of their administrative punishment. Additionally, four other cases were highlighted, including the illegal operation of the "Sword Battle World" online game in Nanchang, Jiangxi; two cases involving the dissemination of harmful information through online games in Bozhou, Anhui; a case in Nanjing, Jiangsu involving the publishing of an obscene novel on the online platform Yue Ming Chinese; and a case in Hengshui, Hebei where authorities uncovered the "Loli Forum" website, which was distributing obscene materials for profit. The head of the National Anti-Pornography and Illegal Publications Office stated that, with the spring school term approaching, there would be increased efforts to clean up the cultural environment around primary and secondary schools. This includes thorough inspections of bookstores, newsstands, stationery shops, and electronics repair shops near campuses. Authorities will strictly deal with illegal and harmful publications and information to ensure a healthy cultural atmosphere for the start of the new term. **Beijing News Reporter Ni Wei** **Editor Liu Dan** **Proofreader Guo Liqin**
